Innovative search technology is an essential ingredient to successful information access and retrieval.  It has become an integral part of today’s electronic information products and services and of enterprise intranets, and it is key to fueling the expansion and usage of the Web.  This session will provide insights on the current state-of-the-art in search engine technology and where improvements are needed.  It will also include a case study on how to choose the right technology to meet the often complex - and conflicting - user requirements within an organization, and the issues to consider before implementation.

Ease of product use and ease of data interpretation are top priorities for users when selecting products and services that will be frequently accessed, and information providers must ensure that their product platforms evolve to meet changing customer requirements.  This session will examine the new generation of user interface applications that could take existing products to an even higher level of acceptance, and provide insights as to how new forms of unstructured or semi-structured data can be accommodated, what new data presentation methods such as visualization are appropriate, and how diverse data formats such as videos and images can be handled.

The conference opened with a glimpse of an information future as shaped by current search engines and the Web. The reality of our current environment was demonstrated by search result comparisons and by an analysis of usage trends across all sectors of the information community.  Tools to effect change -- new data formats, technology for data mining, search engines, user interfaces, and business models -- all were presented.  Now let us look at the future if information providers accept today's reality and use new tools and opportunities to leverage their very unique skills, experience and expertise.
