Information Today drew my attention to Abe Lederman's talk at SLA and the re-launch of Deep Web Technologies' federated science portal, ScienceResearch.com. Lederman is President of Deep Web Technologies, which is also the company behind the search technology in use at Science.gov. What makes his presentation of interest is his discussion of the challenges of scaling federated search in ways that enhance the user experience. Lederman lists those challanges as:

* How do we facilitate source selection;
* How can we ensure that results are relevant and well-organized;
* How can the federated search engine manage traffic to sources;
* How does the federated search engine handle the computational load;
* How do we find, build, and maintain connectors for 1,000 sources?

His paper is worth a read as is Paula Hanes' News Break about the re-launch.
