Eric Swenson
Senior Director, Product Management
Elsevier, Inc.

  Eric Swenson is the senior director of product management for Elsevier’s abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature. Previously, he managed Elsevier’s search & discovery platforms, the SciVerse Hub, Scirus and SciTopics, respectively. Prior to joining Elsevier in 2011, Swenson was the director of program management for the Hearst Corporation’s Interactive Media division and an independent consultant serving the new product development and research needs of entities ranging from AT&T Labs Research to startups, interactive agencies, inventors, musicians, investigative journalists, photographers and fine artists. In addition to his work at Elsevier, Swenson collaborates frequently with colleagues in the worlds of technology, art, music and design on audiovisual projects. He recently served as a contributor to the new O’Reilly book, UX Strategy by Jaime Levy and his early pioneering digital art was featured at the international “Welcome to the Future!” show at iMal Center for Digital Cultures and Technology in Brussels, Belgium. He lives in East Northport, NY with his wife and two children.

Deanna Marcum

 Deanna Marcum serves as senior advisor to the Ithaka S+R after serving for four years as managing director. Ithaka S+R is a non-profit research and consulting service that assists universities and colleges, libraries, publishers, and cultural institutions as they make the transition to the digital environment. Deanna continues to lead projects in all of these sectors.

  From 2003 to 2011, Deanna served as associate librarian for Library Services, Library of Congress. She managed 53 divisions and offices whose 1,600 employees are responsible for acquisitions, cataloging, public service, and preservation activities; services to the blind and physically handicapped; and network and bibliographic standards for America's national library. She is also responsible for integrating the emerging digital resources into the traditional artifactual library, the first step toward building a national digital library for the 21st century.

  In 1995, Deanna was appointed president of the Council on Library Resources and president of the Commission on Preservation and Access. She oversaw the merger of these two organizations into the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) in 1997 and served as president until August 2003.

  Deanna served as director of public service and collection management at the Library of Congress from 1993 to 1995. Before that she was the dean of the School of Library and Information Science at The Catholic University of America. From 1980 to 1989, she was first a program officer and then vice president of the Council on Library Resources.

  Deanna holds a doctor of philosophy in American studies, a master's degree in library science, and a bachelor's degree in English. She was awarded a doctorate in humane letters by North Carolina State University in 2010, and received the Melvil Dewey Medal, the highest award conferred by the American Library Association, in June 2011. Deanna was appointed by President Obama to the Japan-US Friendship Commission, which seeks "to strengthen the US-Japan relationship through educational, cultural, and intellectual exchange," in 2013. In 2016, Deanna was named the Miles Conrad Lecturer by NFAIS.

Peter Simon
Vice President
NewsBank, Inc.

  Peter Simon is vice president of product management at NewsBank, Inc. He directs the development of key products while working on numerous strategic initiatives important to the growth of the company.

  Simon began his career as an Editor at RR Bowker; progressed to executive vice president of business development and database publishing at Reed Reference Publishing; served as vice president of business development at the Lexis-Nexis division of Reed Elsevier; and also served as a vice president with the Gale Group, where he directed product management, content distribution and alliances. In addition, Simon developed content licensing functions for several publishers and represented a machine-aided indexing company working with major publishers and information services.

  Simon received his B.A. in English Literature from City College of New York and an M.S. in library and information services at Columbia University. He was chair of the Software and Information Industry Association Content Division's Board of Directors.

Ryan Bernier

  Ryan Bernier is vice president of database partnerships at EBSCO Information Services in Ipswich, MA.  Ryan started with EBSCO in 2000 and is dedicated to the success of subject indexes, which are a core business for EBSCO.  Over his career, Ryan has held several positions and collaborated with multiple departments including publisher relations, business development, product management, order management, sales & marketing. While involved in EBSCO's many proprietary subject indexes, Ryan is focused primarily on helping EBSCO’s subject index partners expand their reach and strengthen their value during challenging and changing conditions in the industry.  Ryan also serves on the NFAIS Marketing Committee.

Ann Michael

Delta Think, Inc.

  Ann Michael is the president and founder of Delta Think. Through her leadership Delta Think has grown from a single consultant to a hybrid team of staff and trusted associates. Her strength is in defining and executing customer-centered business, product, and implementation strategies. Although she has extensive background implementing large business and technical programs, her unique value is her successful experience managing organizational change and transitions.

  Michael has worked in eight different industries including information management, strategy and management consulting, software development, and publishing. Before founding Delta Think in 2005, she progressed through the ranks of various technology and content companies, from project manager/business analyst to executive management. Michael is active in the publishing industry and is Past President of the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP). She is also a frequent organizer and speaker at publishing conferences and is a contributor to the SSP’s blog, The Scholarly Kitchen.

Ghazal Badiozamani

  Ghazal Badiozamani is vice president of product management at Elsevier, where she is helping transform the company from a traditional publisher (owner of 20% of the world’s academic journals) to a data-driven, digital decision support provider for the medical and scientific community. Prior to Elsevier, Ghazal worked with partners at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers to incubate two companies. In a prior life, she spent almost a decade as a program officer at the United Nations, mediating global environmental negotiations. Ghazal holds an undergraduate degree from Stanford, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and an MBA from Wharton. 

Suzanna Daulerio
Product Manager
ASTM International

  Suzanne Daulerio is product manager at ASTM International (ASTM), a standards development organization in West Conshohocken, PA. More than 30,000 volunteer members of ASTM work in an open and transparent process to deliver 12,700+ test methods, specifications, guides and practices that support industries and governments worldwide. Daulerio is responsible for the development and marketing of ASTM Compass®, the flagship product for delivery of ASTM technical content and services. She is also liaison with discovery and indexing service providers. Daulerio helped create ASTM’s first Product Advisory Councils, whose continuous role is to discuss product features and evaluate new product suggestions, and help guide implementation of services consistent with the ASTM mission, strategic plan, and the direction provided by ASTM business models.

  Previously she spent more than 10 years in the medical communications industry directing continuing education initiatives for healthcare professionals. Daulerio received her B.A. in Communications from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She currently resides in South Jersey

Brian Hitson
Director
U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)

  Brian Hitson is director of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), a DOE corporate function that is managed by the Office of Science.  OSTI fulfills agency-wide responsibilities to collect, preserve, and disseminate scientific and technical information emanating from DOE research and development (R&D) activities.

  Prior to being appointed OSTI Director in September 2014, Hitson led a range of programmatic and administrative activities at OSTI, including strategic planning, budget formulation and execution, information product development, and cost-reimbursable project management.  As OSTI’s Associate Director for Administration and Information Services, he developed and implemented a number of strategic initiatives and managed line responsibilities in international information exchange programs, administrative and financial management, classified and sensitive information programs, and the digitization and preservation of a 1.2 million scientific document repository. 

  As the senior official at OSTI's facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, he is the site manager for a 134,000 square foot building, which contains DOE's historic collection of unclassified, sensitive, and classified R&D results and a modern IT infrastructure serving over 400 million web transactions per year.

  Hitson co-authored the 2014 DOE Public Access Plan, developing a strategy for providing public access to the scholarly publications resulting from DOE’s R&D efforts, and, along with DOE, Office of Science, and OSTI colleagues, he led the August 2014 launch of the DOE Public Access Gateway for Energy and Science, or DOE PAGES.  He has spearheaded innovations in multimedia and multilingual information access, including the 2011 launch of ScienceCinema, a unique speech-indexed search engine for DOE and CERN scientific video collections, and the global, multilingual federated search engine WorldWideScience.org.  He is the U.S. representative to the IAEA's International Nuclear Information System (INIS); and chairs the technical activities committee of the International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI).

A member of the federal Senior Executive Service, Hitson has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Master's in Business Administration, both from the University of Tennessee, and is a 2011 graduate of the Federal Executive Institute's Leadership for a Democratic Society program.

Paula Krebs
Executive Director
Modern Language Association

   Paula Krebs is the executive director of the Modern Language Association (MLA).  From 2012 to 2017, she served as the dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Bridgewater State University and was previously a professor of English at Wheaton College.

  Krebs received her bachelor's of arts in English and Women's Studies from La Salle University in 1980. She received her Ph.D. in English from Indiana University in 1992.

  Before arriving at Bridgewater State, Krebs was a special assistant to the president at Wheaton College, an American Council on Education Fellow in the president’s office of the University of Massachusetts, and a professor and department chair at Wheaton. Krebs is a board member of the National Humanities Alliance and a former board member of the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.  She has also been a regular contributor to higher education publications and writes a column for the Chronicle of Higher Education’s blog Vitae.

Julia Laurin
Head of Product, Scientific & Academic Research

  Julia Laurin is vice president, head of Endnote at Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property & Science).  She is responsible for EndNote’s market growth, product management, and channel operations, with special focus on the strategy and development of Clarivate’s foundational researcher offerings.

  Julia recently served as vice president, head of product management where she oversaw product development for the Scientific and Academic Research portfolio, including the Web of Science, InCites, Journal Citation Reports, Converis, and EndNote. Previous roles at Clarivate include head of research management and director of product strategy for research analytics, where she led development of the next generation InCites platform.  Julia is an avid supporter of R&D efforts and academic collaborations that generate greater understanding of the structure and dynamics of science.  She also has a strong professional interested in community initiatives to accelerate innovation in the practice of research, and has served as company liaison to VIVO, CASRAI, and SHARE. 

  Before joining Intellectual Property & Science, Julia worked in product development for the Legal division of Thomson Reuters, where she focused on expert witness products and services. Julia holds a J.D. from UC Berkeley and B.A. in International Relations from Wellesley College.

Allan Lu
Vice President, Research Tool, Services and Platforms

  Allan Lu, vice president of research tools, services and platforms at ProQuest, has 26 years of information industry experience. He is responsible for global product and services design and development for academic libraries in 170 countries; he also manages P&L of the company’s dissertation publishing business. Prior to joining ProQuest in 2014, he was the head of product management at Elsevier, managing the company’s flagship product ScienceDirect.com. Before Elsevier, he had two years in management consulting with Fortune 500 companies. From 1990 to 2006 he worked at LexisNexis and served in a variety of technical and managerial positions from R&D of search engine to general management in legal research business. Allan holds an MBA from the University of Chicago, a Ph.D. in information science from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, and a B.Sc in computer science from Wuhan University in China.

Chris McCue 
Vice President, Marketing

  Chris McCue, Vice President, Marketing, has been with CAS since 1988. McCue began her career at CAS in the editorial division and has held a variety of positions in marketing, with the majority of her experience in product marketing. Prior to CAS, McCue held supervisory positions as an analytical chemist at Battelle Memorial Institute and Roxanne Labs. She is currently responsible for global marketing of CAS products, including functions such as brand management, promotions, product management, operations, and pricing strategies. McCue holds a B.A. in Chemistry and an M.B.A., both from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio.

Mary Sauer-Games;
Vice President, Product Management
OCLC, Inc.

  Mary Sauer-Games is the vice president of product management at OCLC, where she plays an instrumental role in the development of all OCLC products and services.

  Sauer-Games was most recently senior director for PsycINFO at the American Psychological Association (APA), where she worked on the development of PsycINF and the PsycNET platform, focusing on the development of new products to support research and learning in psychology while creating a positive end-user experience. Prior to joining the APA, Sauer-Games was vice president, Publishing-Humanities and STM at ProQuest. She joined ProQuest in 2002 as director, Chadwyck-Healey North American Publishing, where she managed a cross-functional marketing and product management team to develop the next generation of Chadwyck-Healey brand products. She later served as vice president of publishing, for ProQuest's Chadwyck-Healey brand. She oversaw the development of new Chadwyck-Healey products, including the 19th Century Parliamentary Papers, Black Studies Center, and C19: The Nineteenth Century Index, as well as the relaunch of Literature Online, EEBO and Periodicals Archive Online.

  Sauer-Games has more than 20 years of experience in publishing, strategic planning, marketing and sales. Prior to joining ProQuest, Sauer-Games held several leadership positions at The Gale Group (now part of Cengage Learning), including vice president of e-Learning. She has also held various marketing and sales positions at Mullen Advertising, R.L Polk & Co., and Data Resources, Inc. (now part of McGraw-Hill). She has a B.A. from Kalamazoo College and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan
