Journal of High Energy Physics turns twenty

Heidelberg | Milan, August 2, 2017 -- Flagship physics journal celebrates 20 years of open access electronic publishing – by physicists and for physicists

In July 2017, the open access Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP) celebrated its 20-year anniversary. The journal belongs to the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy and is published by Springer in collaboration with SISSA Medialabsrl. JHEP covers world-leading research in high-energy physics, as well as related topics including general relativity, gravitation, and mathematical aspects of quantum field theories.

When JHEP was founded by Daniele Amati and Loriano Bonora in July 1997, the aim was to create a journal which would allow physicists to write, submit, referee and edit papers in an electronic format – a concept that was very new at the time. As a result of this foresight, JHEP soon became one of the most prestigious journals in the field. Since 2014, the costs of publishing open access in the journal (the article processing charges, APCs) have been completely covered by the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP3).

"I would like to, above all, thank the scientific directors and the many editors and referees of the journal over the past two decades," said Enrico Balli, the CEO of SISSA Medialab. "Without their expertise and valued contributions this important milestone would have been impossible. As ever, JHEP stays true to its mission to remain an independent journal at the service of the scientific community and to maintain the highest level of quality in the field. I look forward to even more successful future endeavors."

Christian Caron, Executive Publishing Editor at Springer, said: "We are proud to serve as partner to SISSA Medialab in publishing this prestigious journal. It is our common aim to deliver high-quality sustainable open access publications, which combine all relevant economic, technical and scientific considerations."
