Taming The Information Tsunami: The New World of Discovery
The Web, search engines and social media have created a new world of information abundance. Scholars and researchers are bombarded daily by e-mails, RSS feeds, and postings from blogs, social networks, and other sources. Web searching can deliver thousands of relevant results. Yet, despite the abundance, discovery of the most relevant, credible, quality information can be difficult and time-consuming. Why? Information no longer resides solely within peer-reviewed journals. It is accessible from multiple resources scattered around the globe that do not conform to a uniform standard of quality - from publishers and other content providers, online communities of interest, and bloggers. No longer limited to text, information can be found in videos, sound tracks, pictures, data sets, charts, and graphs. The information discovery process is changing for everyone and publishers, librarians and users all face the same challenge - to ensure that reliable information is not missed and misinformation is not used.
How can content providers efficiently navigate the information tsunami to provide scholars and researchers with the reliable, relevant information that deserves their time and attention - no matter what the source or format? How does that information get filtered, made consumable, and incorporated into workflows? What roles can semantic search, image search and the social graph play in finding the specific information that users want? Who is improving the overall search experience with touch technologies, predictive tools and personalized search? How can large volumes of information across all media be acquired, processed and transmitted to an increasingly mobile and collaborative global research community? Where is that content stored - on the desk, shelves, servers or in the Cloud? And what new business practices are emerging that are in sync with the delivery of data "chunks" and expectations for reuse of content?
The 53rd NFAIS Annual Conference will discuss these issues and more. No matter what role you play in the information community - content or technology provider, educator, librarian or other information professional - this meeting is for you. It will provide you with an ideal opportunity to network with the major players who are shaping the new world of information discovery, and learn how your products and services can be enhanced to be a part of that world.
