Dr. John Regazzi Named as 2004 Miles Conrad Lecturer

NFAIS ANNOUNCES DR. JOHN J. REGAZZI OF ELSEVIER AS THE RECIPIENT OF THE 2004 MILES CONRAD AWARD

Philadelphia, PA, November 5, 2003 – NFAIS (www.nfais.org), the premier membership association for organizations that aggregate, organize and facilitate access to information, announced today that Dr. John J. Regazzi, Managing Director, Market Development of Elsevier, will be presented with the prestigious Miles Conrad Award on February 23, 2004 at the NFAIS Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA.

According to Marjorie M. K. Hlava, NFAIS President, the objective of the Miles Conrad Memorial Lecture, established in 1965 in commemoration of NFAIS founder, G. Miles Conrad, is to recognize and honor those members of the Information Community who have made significant contributions to the field of information science and to NFAIS itself. “Dr. Regazzi is well deserving of this award”, stated Hlava. “John was a visionary pioneer in the automation of the publishing process at the H. W. Wilson Company, and also in the utilization of the Web as a scientific information communication channel with the development of the innovative Ei Information Village launched in 1995. Throughout his career he has made major contributions in all areas of electronic scientific publishing. He is well known within the worldwide information community and has been a strong supporter of NFAIS. We are very pleased to bestow our organization’s highest honor upon Dr. Regazzi.”

Dr. Regazzi expressed similar sentiments. “I am both surprised and extremely pleased to have been chosen as the 2004 recipient of this award. To be numbered among the Miles Conrad Lecturers is both an honor and a humbling experience, and I am extremely grateful to the NFAIS Board of Directors for this recognition. It is one of the highlights of my career.”

Dr. Regazzi’s career is notable both for its breadth of academic disciplines and for its scope of applications. He has extensive experience in data collection, systems & programming, new product development, and strategic business development. He served as Vice President of The H. W. Wilson Company from 1983-1988, leaving to become President and CEO of Engineering Information, Inc. (Ei). In 1998, he led the integration of Ei into Elsevier, the world's leading publisher of scientific, technical and medical publications, where he became responsible for globally extending that organization’s electronic publishing strategy. He currently serves on the Elsevier Board of Directors and is responsible for all of their new market development initiatives.

Dr. Regazzi received his doctorate in Computer and Information Science from Rutgers University in 1982. He is a graduate of Columbia University, where he earned an M.A. with honors in library and information Science. He also holds an M.A. in religious studies from the University of Iowa, and a B.A. in experimental psychology from St. John’s University. In addition to having served on Board of Directors of NFAIS and the Division of Scholarly Communications of the American Association of Publishers, Dr. Regazzi is currently on the Board of the Ei Foundation and CABI.

Dr. Regazzi will present the Miles Conrad Memorial Lecture on Monday, February 23, 2004 at 4:15pm during the NFAIS Annual Conference. This will be the 37th such lecture in a series that has continued unbroken since it began in 1968. Dr. Regazzi joins a list of past Lecturers who are representative of the leaders and creative thinkers of the information world (see the complete listing of Miles Conrad Lecturers).

The NFAIS Annual Conference, entitled The Battle for Mindshare: Information Access and Retrieval in the Year 2010, will take place from February 22 - 24, 2004 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. [see press release]
