Training Videos for Library Education


The following are links to various training videos for use by libraries and information schools worldwide in the teaching of effective and efficient information access, search and retrieval. These resources have been developed as an educational effort by the member organizations of NFAIS.

American Psychological Association

  • YouTube Videos - Training videos on all of the major vendor platforms that deliver APA databases. The videos are in playlists by vendor.

  • YouTube Videos - Videos about the British Library, the national library of the UK

British Standards Institution

CABI - CAB Direct

  • Quick Search Screen - This two minute video shows the basics required for performing a simple keyword search. It also introduces the display screen and a full CABI database record.
  • Search Refine - This tutorial will show you how to refine the results with the addition of extra search terms.
  • MyCABDirect - Alerts and RSS Feeds - This tutorial shows you how to set up and use the MyCABDirect feature
  • Multi Term Searching - This tutorial will show you how to build more complex, mulit-term searches and introduces the concept of Boolean Operators to specify the exact relationships between the search terms.
  • Outputting Search Results - Once you have the search results you want, learn how to output the records in the most appropriate format.
  • Search History Screen - The Search History Screen shows you a list of all the searches performed in the current search session. It also allows you to combine the results of different searches and save your search profile to re-run at a later date.
  • Advanced Search Screen - The Advanced Search Screen allows you to build a complex search strategy on multiple search lines. This tutorial also introduces the idea of limiting search terms to specific data fields like the CABI Indexing terms, very useful for improving the quality or relevance of your search results.

  • Simple Searching in Basic Search Mode - How to perform a simple search of CAB Abstracts using multiple keywords in OvidSP, Basic Search Mode.
  • Refining Your Search Results - After running your initial search, this tutorial shows you how to use the OvidSP Search Aids to refine your search results.
  • Phrase Searching in Basic Search Mode - This tutorial shows you how to restrict your search, in Basic Search mode, to specific phrases, rather than individual words.
  • Advance Ovid: The Basics - This tutorial introduces Advanced Ovid search mode and multi-term searching, using single words and phrases, and Boolean search operators.
  • Global Health Instructions - This tutorial introduces some advanced techniques for searching Global Health on the OvidSP platform.

CABI - Web of Knowledge

  • Simple Searching - This video describes how to use the Web of Knowledge search interface to perform a simple keyword search.
  • Multi-Term Searching - This tutorial descibes how to create a more complex search using multiple search terms and combining them with Boolean Operators AND and OR.

  • How to Calculate the h-Index - Watch this short tutorial explaining the essence of the h-index. How it is calculated manually in addition to where you can find it in Scopus. The h-index is an indication on a scientist's performance based on the number of documents published and the citation received over time.
  • Staying Up To Date With New Research - How can you make sure that you stay up-to-date with new publications in your research field? How can you best automate the updating process by using RSS feeds and email alerts? Watch this short tutorial explaining how Scopus can support you.
  • Calculation of SNIP and SJR - This short video explains how SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) are calculated. SJR and SNIP are considering in which context in which a Journal is performing looking at differences in research areas with different citation behaviors.
  • Scientific Author Identifier - This preview search allows anyone to look up a specific author and check their profile for numbers of documents published, numbers of references, received citations and the h-index and more.
  • Download Management - Do you spend a lot of time getting articles downloaded for your research and storing them in a way that you can find them back? Scopus Document Download Manager provides an easy way to download up to 50 documents at the same time and you choose where and how.
  • Journal Performance Data - How can you make sure that you aim your publication at the right journal? Find out how you can increase your chances of receiving a lot of citation from your peers by using Journal performance data from Scopus.
