Wikimedia Foundation Principle Research Scientist to Keynote NFAIS 2019 Artificial Intelligence Conference


April 23, 2019, Annapolis, MD—Computer scientist, Dr. Aaron Halfaker, who gained significant media attention for his development of an artificial intelligence product that grades the quality of Wikipedia edits—the Objective Revision Evaluation Service (ORES)—will deliver the closing keynote address at the upcoming NFAIS conference, Artificial Intelligence: Finding Its Place in Research Discovery and Scholarly Publishing, on March 15-16, 2019 at Alexandria, VAs Hilton Old Town.

Dr. Halfaker is a senior scientist at the University of Minnesota and a principal research scientist at the Wikimedia Foundation, where he studies the intersection of advanced algorithmic technologies and social issues in open production communities using a mixture of experimental engineering, data science and ethnographic methods.  With the recent growth of data informed design and engineering in online spaces, data science practices are now capable of answering social questions.

In his presentation, Halfaker will discuss Wikipedia’s most pressing and strategically important research questions, as well as how he and Wikimedia’s research team of 6 people are utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to solve skewed representation, retain newcomers, and manage volunteer disputes.

The NFAIS 2019 AI Conference explores the application and implication of AI across all sectors of scholarship, and how AI is changing the way we seek out, discover, interact with and benefit from scholarship.  Attendees will learn how AI is being used by publishers, libraries, and content aggregators to create new products and increase value.
